Important Changes: Social Security Administration (SSA) Moves to Login.gov for Online Access (already here!)

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is making an important change to how recipients and users access their online services. Starting in mid-2024 and continuing into 2025, SSA is transitioning users from the existing my Social Security portal login system to login.gov — the secure, government-wide authentication platform managed by the General Services Administration (GSA).

Here’s what you need to know:

Why the Change?

Login.gov provides a single, more secure sign-in experience for multiple federal agencies. By moving to this unified system, SSA aims to:

  • Strengthen online security against fraud and identity theft
  • Simplify account management for users
  • Improve accessibility with enhanced support for multi-factor authentication (MFA), including authentication apps and biometrics
  • Align with federal cybersecurity modernization initiatives

What Does This Mean for SSA Users?

If you currently have a my Social Security account:

  • You will be prompted to link or transition your login credentials to a login.gov account during your next login attempt.
  • If you already have a login.gov account (for example, with another agency like TSA PreCheck, USAJOBS, or FEMA), you can use your existing login.gov credentials to access SSA services — no need to create a new account.

If you do not have a login.gov account:

  • You will need to create one. This involves verifying your email address, creating a secure password, and setting up multi-factor authentication.

Once transitioned, you will use login.gov credentials to access your Social Security account information, estimate benefits, request documents, and manage your services online.

What You’ll Need to Create a login.gov Account:

  • A valid email address you can access
  • A strong password
  • A second layer of authentication, such as:
    • An authentication app (like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)
    • SMS text message verification

SSA is providing a step-by-step guide to assist users through the transition process, and additional support resources are available through their website and customer service lines.  https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/account-transition-faqs.html

Important Dates to Watch:

  • Transition for new SSA users to login.gov: Already underway
  • By March 29, 2025 all SSA online users must access services through login.gov.

Why It Matters:

Keeping access to your SSA account secure is critical. Social Security information is a major target for fraudsters. By consolidating authentication under a stronger federal platform, SSA is proactively working to safeguard your sensitive data while offering a more consistent and modern user experience across government services.
